Anglers fish for salmon

Anglers fish for salmon

Anglers fish for salmon with rod and reel, often using flies as bait. Commercial fishing for salmon is done on a much larger scale, employing traps and pound nets to catch the fish on the way to their spawning grounds. Anglers initially started injecting baits with fish oils using hypodermic needles. Commercial products are now available that have an injector head fitted to a squeeze bottle holding the attractant scent. Anglers can purchase an early morning fishing pass, that - when accompanied with a season pass. That pass, and the combination to the gate that accompanies it, are readily available at Sebago Lake State Park.

Anglers are finding walleyes along the shore fishing with waders or in boats. Stickbaits and the nitro minnow in blue/silver and black/silver are working well.

Anglers should note that there are two closures on each river in late June and early July, said Brett Barkdull, WDFW fish biologist. Barkdull suggests checking WDFW's Fishing in Washington pamphlet (http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/regs/fishregs.htm) before heading out on the river. Anglers are using a mixture of baits and lures with corkies and yarn the most prevalent bait used. Water levels have risen with some color. Anglers at Rangeley Lake also kept 12 brook trout and released 23 legal-size and 2 sublegal trout. The biggest salmon checked at Rangeley to date was 4 pounds 7 ounces; the biggest trout was 1 pound 3 ounces.

Anglers fishing Burt are also getting some walleyes and the occasional rainbow or brown trout. Dave also reports an abundance of “stumper” or honey mushrooms, commenting that “they are everywhere” and he has already harvested and canned a bunch. Anglers are having best luck in the mornings in the south end of the lake using night crawlers. Anglers go out less often and when they do, they want to take home five not three, if possible.

Anglers at barrier dam and Blue Creek have been catching limits of coho. Friday, the 400-foot boundary marker was moved to within 100 feet of barrier dam, said Karen Glazer of Barrier Dam Campground. Anglers can now turn their attention to the many rainbow trout fisheries that remain open all-year round. Indeed, some may choose to fish for pike or bass on the fly during the winter months. Anglers who fish spinning lures and bait have had a wonderful season because the continuous high water level produced ideal fishing conditions. I heard of one angler who had passed the century mark in sewin caught, with the Rapala being his most effective bait.
