Chinook or King Salmon fishing

Chinook or King Salmon fishing

Chinook prefer larger and deeper water to spawn in than other species of salmon and can be found on the spawning redds (nests) from September through to December. After laying eggs in a redd, adult female Chinook will guard the redd from 4 to 25 days before dying, while males look for additional mates. Chinook and coho salmon are in the Lake Ontario tributaries. Good baits are egg sacks, streamers and egg imitating plastics and flies.

Chinook or King Salmon fishing is best from about May 15 to July 15 with these fish averaging about 35 pounds with some ranging over 50 pounds. By mid-June, the Kenai River Chinooks migrate in full force and will continue through July until season ends July 31. Chinook up to fifty pounds will be caught here in July. The selective chinook fishery (hatchery fish only) will be going strong at Sekiu all month, while Port Angeles will take off towards the end of the month. Chinook and coho salmon charge into the Kalama in two waves; spring and fall. Regulations should be carefully read, as salmon fishing is open all year except there is a fly- fishing only period of time in fall, a size limitation on Chinook salmon in early winter, the Kalama from Summers Creek down to the salmon hatchery is open only from the Saturday before Memorial Day to Nov.

Chinook can be identified by their small eye, black gums at the base of their teeth, long black spots along their back and tail. While in salt water, the Chinook has a dark back with a greenish-blue sheen.

Anglers may keep one fall chinook per day, including jacks, and have three in possession. They may only keep fish with a clipped adipose fin, evidenced by a healed scar, and they may keep 40 salmon for the year, including spring, summer and fall chinook. Anglers averaged one chinook for every 17 hours of fishing. Weekend checks: 119 anglers caught nine chinook. Anglers must use a small aluminum boat and 4-wheel drive vehicle to launch. Shoreline anglers seem to do well.

Bait using salmon roe is also known to be highly productive, but is illegal in some areas. Herring is very popular for silver salmon fishing in saltwater. Bait fishing with worm is accepted only without leather sinker, says fish resource administrator, Ingvar Korsen.

Iceland’s wild salmon are now key contributors to the national economy. Across the North Atlantic, private incentives have enhanced conservation efforts and the value of salmon to fishermen, landowners and rural economies. Ice caps are doing ok. Greenland is not showing signs of melting.
